What is E-collar Training?

Communication, Clarity & Freedom
Introducing the E-Collar:
An e-collar (electronic collar) is a training tool that allows us to communicate with our dogs at a distance, establish clear boundaries, and reinforce previously learned behaviors.
When introduced thoughtfully and used correctly, an e-collar can be an incredibly valuable tool for many dogs and their owners. Dogs of different sizes, personalities, and sensitivities may benefit from e-collar training, provided the approach is tailored to the individual dog.
One of the greatest benefits is the opportunity to give dogs more freedom to explore, run, and enjoy the world off-leash while maintaining reliable communication with their handler.
Yes, these are also commonly referred to as "shock collars." They deliver electrical stimulation, not electrocution. Like many training tools, they can be misused, particularly when someone lacks the knowledge to recognize a dog's emotional response or understand how learning takes place.
An e-collar should never simply be placed on a dog and used to correct unwanted behavior without first establishing clear communication and ensuring the dog understands what is being asked of them.
Â
How I Introduce the E-Collar:
Â
Step 1:
Getting Comfortable With the Collar
Before introducing any stimulation, I have the dog wear the inactive e-collar for several days. This allows them to become comfortable wearing it without associating the collar itself with stimulation or a particular training exercise.
Step 2:
Finding the Working Level
Once the dog is comfortable wearing the collar, I begin introducing stimulation at the lowest setting, gradually increasing one level at a time while carefully observing the dog's response.
I'm looking for the lowest level the dog can perceive without showing signs of concern, fear, or discomfort.
Sometimes this response is incredibly subtle: a slight shift of the eyes, a flick of an ear, or a momentary acknowledgment, almost as though the dog is thinking, "What was that?"
Then they return to whatever they were doing, seemingly deciding, "Well, I guess that was nothing."
That's exactly the kind of neutral acknowledgment I'm looking for. I don't want the dog startled, worried, or anticipating something unpleasant. If I see those responses, I reassess rather than continuing to increase the stimulation.
Step 3:
Teaching Recall Through Positive Reinforcement
Using a long line, plenty of rewards, and clear communication, I begin teaching the dog to come when called.
The foundation of my recall training is positive reinforcement. I want the dog to understand the behavior, enjoy returning to their handler, and recognize that coming when called leads to something rewarding.
Once the dog understands the recall cue, I carefully introduce the e-collar as an additional communication signal, pairing it with the behaviors and cues the dog has already learned.
The goal is not to have a dog that responds out of fear of the collar. It's to develop a dog that understands the communication, responds confidently, and remains happy and engaged throughout the learning process.
The Goal: Reliable Recall and Greater Freedom
Â
Ultimately, I want your dog to have the freedom to be a dog.
To run, sniff, explore, and enjoy their environment while maintaining a reliable connection with you, even at a distance.
E-collar training isn't a shortcut, and the collar itself doesn't replace the relationship, foundation, or ongoing training you build with your dog. It is simply another tool in our communication toolbox.
My philosophy is simple: Teach first. Communicate clearly. Be fair to the dog. Build reliability through understanding, not confusion.
Minimum of 10 sessions for this training. We can do this with day training or 1:1 sessions.Â
